The White Sands Pupfish of the Peco

The White Sands Pupfish of the Pecos League have agreed to have Rawlings Bats as their Bat Sponsor for the 2013 season. Rawlings is the most widely used bat in Minor League Baseball.

Rawlings is one of many companies that have contacted the Pecos League about being an exclusive bat. The Pecos League will have either eight or nine teams and has eliminated the use of composite bats for the 2013 season. Each team in the Pecos League will have an exclusive bat contract. For more information on Rawlings visit http://www.rawlings.com

Ernie Munoz has been named the 2013

Ernie Munoz has been named the 2013 Field Manager for the White Sands Pupfish. The Offensive MVP of the inaugural Pecos League season replaces Justin Lowery, and was widely regarded as a fan favorite his 2 seasons as a player in Alamogordo. He will bring the same energy to the dugout as he did on the field, along with much needed leadership, purpose, and a sense of direction. Ernie is very familiar with the town, the Pupfish fans, the media, and City officials so the transition period will be quick and smooth. He is also very familiar with current and past Pecos league players and coaches, which will give him an advantage in scouting and devising line ups to face our opponents. His connections with the California college ranks and Independent leagues will also give him a leg up in assembling a team.

White Sands fans should be pleased with his familiarity with the inner workings of the league and expect the team to get off to a quick start. The best aspect that ensures success, is that Mr. Munoz wants to be here in Alamogordo. It is his desire to win a championship for the fans and community, saying that Alamogordo is a great place with great people. He truly appreciates his time here in the past, and being a part of something special. The Pupfish were establishing a dominant team that just fell short 2011 and Ernie wants to come back and finish the job.

Excitement for baseball will return to the community and the attendance should rise. All in all, not only is this a great move for the White Sands franchise but the league as a whole. The rising tide will "lift all boats".

Ernie Munoz to take over in White Sands.

Alamogordo fans need no introduction to Ernie Munoz who will be the third Pupfish Manager in the 2013 season. Ernie is an original Pupfish and played both years in White Sands.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, Munoz went on to play professionally for four different teams, including the Coastal (Tex.) Kingfish of the Continental Baseball League in 2009, the Rockford (Ill.) Riverhawks of the Northern League in 2010 and the White Sands (N.M.) Pupfish of the Pecos League in 2011. Following the conclusion of White Sands’ season, Munoz was signed by the Chico Outlaws of the North American Baseball League, where he played four games. Ernie played with the Pupfish again at the end of the 2012 season.

During his stay with the Pupfish, Munoz earned the Pecos League’s Offensive Player of the Year award after leading the circuit with a .427 batting average and 103 hits at catcher, while finishing second with 18 doubles, 50 RBI and 63 runs scored. In addition, Munoz collected MVP honors at the Pecos League All

The City of Alamogordo will host Spring Training for four of the Pecos League Teams. The Carlsbad Bats, Pecos Bills and Roswell Invaders will join the White Sands Pupfish for Spring Training in Alamogordo.

The Roswell Invaders were forced to leave Joe Bauman Park for Spring Training as part of their lease reduction. Hotels have always been a problem in Roswell for the players and the league. In the 2012 season the Invaders lost six home games when their host hotel broke their contract and increased the rate in the middle of the season. Roswell has the highest hotel rates in the state of New Mexico and this can be a huge burden for players who are asked to stay a week. Roswell has some of the best fans in the Pecos League who have made the voyage to Alamogordo more than once to see their Invaders.

Carlsbad Bats will likely be on the road again in 2013. The Bats will open the season in Alamgordo and thus conveniently hold Spring Training there.

Alamogordo has three fields and will allow the teams to practice at night. Teams will have rotating practice schedules. Each team will scrimmage the other teams. There are several hotels offer great rates to the players. Each team may also play a game against the El Paso Diablos from the American Association in Spring Training.

Teams provide housing to players once the final roster is released the day before the season. Spring Training lasts a week and generates hotel rooms for cities that host Spring Training. Teams can bring as many as 40 players into Spring Training which means hotel rooms for players that do not have assigned housing.

The White Sands Pupfish will be inviting three German Players in the 2013 season with hopes of one of them making them the team. Alamogordo is home to the German Air Force Tactical Training Center. With a large German Population and German School having a German Player would increase attendence.

"Hopefully we can find someone that can help us out." says Pupfish manager Justin Lowery. This won"t be Lowery"s first international player last season he signed Alexi Gil Ramirez from Cuba. Gil pitched one month with the Triggers before being promoted to the United League.

As the Pecos League prepares for its third season and looks to expand from a 6 to 8 team league, it is important to examine why Alamogordo is the perfect model town to host a franchise and set up to be the best city in the league for years to come.

Every town will pitch itself as the best. Sure Las Cruces has the size that Alamogordo will never attain. Roswell and Santa Fe can boast their tourism. Alpine has their historic stadium at Kokernot Field, but Alamogordo brings so many other intangibles to the region that no other towns can claim.

One only needs to attend an Alamogordo Tigers High School football game or the little league baseball games to see the communities insatiable support for local sports. There is no competition, so it is virtually an untapped market. With no nightlife, other than a single cineplex or cruising Sonic, evening baseball throughout the summer is a perfect alternative.

Not only is Alamogordo a retirement community with people with spare time on their hands and a few extra entertainment dollars to spend, it is also the home of Holloman

The Pecos League has agreed to a two year extension with the City of Alamogordo. The Pupfish will play in Griggs Park 2013-2014 seasons. "We are committed to stay in Alamogordo indefinitely. It is the best city in our league by far." says Pecos League Commisioner Andrew Dunn. The City of Alamogordo has jumped at the opportunity to have pro baseball in their town. Since day one they have been improving Griggs Park with limited and creative resources. The Pecos League has hosted both All-Star Games in Alamogordo and also hosts league tryout camps there. The Pupfish will soon have a minor redesign on their logo/uniforms. The team is currently tied for last place and has never got things in gear this year, but the off the field commitment from the City of Alamogordo is second to none. The Pecos League will be announcing other cities for the 2013 season over the next three months. The Pecos League is expected to stay in the exact six cities that are playing in 2012 with possibility of adding teams for 2012 season.

Did you see how well our number 5 starter did against an excellent hitting club. They only arrived a few minutes before game time. We can expect a slugfest during the balance of the series. ROSWELL -- After five innings of not looking good at all, the Roswell Invaders bounced back yet again Sunday, going from a 5-0 deficit vs. White Sands to a 7-6 victory. And the key to the win was a pitcher, pinch hitter Jonathan Sa, who tied the game at 6-6 in the eighth before Erick Gaylord gave Roswell the one run edge. Jacob Cook then came in and got the Pupfish one-two-three in the ninth to give the Invaders their sixth straight win.

"Our guys keep battling," said Invader manager Chris Ebright. "Kids kept battling. Tip your hat to his starting pitcher. We couldnt figure him out."

White Sands came into the game looking strong, as the bats made contact and starter Justin Kuks shut the Invaders down.

The Fish went up 3-0 in the second when Case Rigby singled; Cody Collins reached on an error then, after Rigby was called out trying to get home, George Ban doubled and Ryan Pembroke doubled Collins and Ban in. Pembroke then scored on a wild pitch before Ed Kohout got the final out.

White Sands left the bases juiced in the third, but added a pair in the fourth when Pembroke walked, Kuks reached on an error and back-to-back singles by J.J. Constantino and Christian Ramirez brought the runners in.

Roswell finally broke their scoring drought in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two when Chad Kruse doubled, Matthew Faiman walked then, with two outs, a wild pitch and a VIncent Mejia single brought the runners in.

The Invaders made it 5-3 in the sixth off reliever Matt Barger when Gaylord walked, stole second, went to third on a walk and hit batter then came home on a fielders choice.

Roswell left the bases loaded -- something both teams did several times Sunday -- when Chad Hadzinsky got the final out.

The Pupfish got the run back in the seventh on a walk to Rigby, who advanced on a wild pitch and came home on an error.

But once again, Rowell wouldnt go quietly, getting out of another bases-loaded jam in the top of the eighth when they turned an error by first baseman Nate Theunissen into a double play that closed out the inning, then scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Sas heroics were set up when Faiman reached on a Pupfish error. With one out, Mejia and McCarthy each walked to load the bases, and this time, the runners came home,

Theunissen hit into a fielders choice that saw Faiman out at the plate, but reliever Michael Willis walked Andrew Deeds to force in Mejia and Sa came in to pinch hit, singling home two with a ball that bounced off the pitchers glove then took a bad hop past the infielder. Gaylord then singled in Deeds for what would be the winning run.

"Coach (Kevin) Dore and I had a feeling (about Sa), and thats what you do," Ebright said. "Had a feeling he could do it and we put him in there."
"They ended up getting runners on there then they got the hit when they needed it. Thats it. Thats baseball," said White Sands acting manager Andrew Parrish. "We just didnt get the timely hit when we needed it."

What made the win even sweeter for Roswell was that the team did do terrible early on.

"We didnt look good," Ebright said. "Offense, defense. We did not look good at all. It was just like we were kind of out of our rhythm. Maybe it was the early game, early time. I dont know what the reason was. We didnt have the enthusiasm we had until the second half, and a hit here and a hit there and good things happen."

The Pupfish out-hit the Invaders 11-8, and both teams made three errors. But 12 walks by four White Sands pitcher were enough to make the difference. Kuks, who was not involved in the decision, struck out 10 and gave up his first run of the season.

A.J. Martin got the win for Roswell with Cook getting the save.

The teams will meet again Monday in Roswell, and Parrish continued to think positive.

"Im not worried about what theyve got going," he said. "I know what weve got here and we can beat that team. We beat ourselves right there. As simple as that. They got the timely hit and we walked a few guys and that hurt us right there and once they got the hit they got the lead. But we can play with these guys any day. Im not worried about that. Steven Lemmon will returning to the White Sands Pupfish as the teams closer. He hit 95 mph at the Pecos League Los Angeles Tryout Camp held in Compton, Ca. Steve was named "The Caveman" by Andrew Dunn after he showed up at camp and looked like he was living in the Sacramento Mountains. White Sands Manager Chris Paterson says "Steve was the best pitcher on White Sands Team in the early going. He was badly overused by the manager when he pitched eight innings one day and was asked to pitch the next day. His arm never recovered all year. Steve is a converted catcher. We will find a spot in our pen for the Caveman."

The June 27-28-29 series has been moved from Roswell to Alamogordo. The visiting teams hotel for the Roswell Invaders is unavailable due to high demand for the UFO festival. Because of this it was an easy switch to move the games to Alamogordo. The teams will meet again in Roswell the next week. This also balances the amount of home games for the two teams.

The Pecos League lost arguably thei

The Pecos League lost arguably their best prospect today as Larry Rodriguez"s contract was bought out by the El Paso Diablos. Larry was slated to goto the White Sands Pupfish. "We hate to lose Larry before he throws a pitch. But we also realized he was going to get better financial offers. So moving him 2500 or miles or moving him 80 miles to play in the same league? Which made sense." Larry will be participating in the Pecos Spring League. Larry is only 20 years old and possesses a power fastball that has reached 96 mph. He was also a standout third baseman in his first season at San Jacinto College in Houston. Larry is from Channelview, Texas

The White Sands Pupfish have added

The White Sands Pupfish have added their Vegas Gold Look to the baseballs for the 2012 season. The Pupfish will use a Rawlings All Star Style Baseball with Vegas Gold Seems and Black Writing. With the Pecos League"s new contract with Rawling the Pupfish ball is going to be a hit with fans and collectors.

The White Sands Pupfish Booster Clu

The White Sands Pupfish Booster Club recently brought Assistant Coach Ryan Parent and Field Manager Chris Paterson to Alamogordo to meet fans and booster club members. During their visit the two visited the Booster Club Meeting, went on air with Radio Station KUPR Bob Flotte Saturday morning, and visited Can"t Stop Smoking BBQ.

The two coaches also got to visit the ballpark where there are alot of improvements in progess. They also toured the Betty Dare center where visiting teams will be staying. "I have seen all cities and all operations in the Pecos League and Alamogordo by far is the best place to play and coach. I won the championship last year in Roswell but I am very excited to be here." Ryan Parent is a Marine and Alamogordo is home to numerous Air Force, he will be accepted by the airman.

The White Sands Pupfish will open the 2012 Campaign in Cohen Stadium against the El Paso Diablos. The game will be 5/9/2012 and will be at 6:30. Pupfish fans will make their regular drive to El Paso down US 54 (Patriot Freeway). This will be final preparation before the Pupfish open their season against the Las Cruces Vaqueros. The Diablos American Association Opener is May 17 at home against the Fargo Moorhead Redhawks in Cohen Stadium.

The White Sands Pupfish ballpark wa

The White Sands Pupfish ballpark was named the aquarium at Griggs Field for the 2011 season. The season went better than expected but people often wondered why is this place named the aquarium when we are the middle of a desert. The logic behind the name was the Fish Nets in right center field that were required to keep games in line with the high altitude. This year the aquarium will exist with water. Matt McNeile and Wally Anderson are partnering to get a swimming pool installed in right field similar to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Obviously the pool won"t be as elaborate as the Diamondbacks but anything with water is welcome in the summer months in the desert. Many Baseball historians believe that BOB Ballpark in Phoenix was the first ballpark with a swimming pool in right field that had a homer splash in a game. They are very wrong in fact Jarry Park in Montreal has a homer land in its neighboring swimming pool in a game by Pirates Slugger Willie Stargell. See Photo

In Alamogordo in the Summer of 2012, any person who wants to attend the game and take a dip can do so for $4. The pool will be in foul territory and will be sponsored by a local pool and spa company. The $4 will goto the booster club.

The 2012 Pecos League All Star Game

The 2012 Pecos League All Star Game will be held in Alamogordo New Mexico. For the second year in a row the Pupfish are hosting the All-Star Game. In 2011 the Game was held in Alamogordo. The White Sands Pupfish, City of Alamogordo and Fans of the Pupfish did a first class job in hosting the tryout camp, the home run derby and the actual All-Star Game.

The game was originally slated to be played in Roswell but there is alot of uncertainty with the Invaders in the offseason. The Invaders are not for sure if they will be playing in Joe Bauman Field or NMMI. Roswell does not know their hotel situation July 8th as the UFO Festival is in town. Also it is extremely difficult for Major League Baseball Scouts to get to Roswell. In 2011 Adam Osteen was signed off the field at the All Star Game by the Arizona Diamondbacks. "We have been contacted by five Major League Team"s scouting departments, the Yankees, Angels, Diamondbacks, Rays and Rangers. All have expressed interest in attending the game if the game is within a realistic distance to a major airport.

"This is the best place for the game period. The fans and community really enjoy the game and situation. We would love to host the game but we realize the travel distances for these teams." says Trinidad Coach Justin Lowery

Here is the schedule for the All Star Game all times (MST)

  • Tryout Camp 10 AM
  • Home Run Derby 12 Noon
  • All Star Game begins at 2:00 PM

The White Sands Pupfish were by far

The White Sands Pupfish were by far the biggest surprise in the 2011 season they made the playoffs and tied Roswell for the league lead in attendance. The City of Alamogordo and the Pecos League didn"t stop in the offseason. The Whites Sands Pupfish named Chris Paterson their manager for the 2012 season. He was manager of the year in 2011. Wally Anderson formed the Pupfish booster club.

In less than one full year the City of Alamogordo has turned Griggs Park into a customized park ideal for Pecos League sized markets. Their game day staff is second to none. They are also in process of being the host cities for league umpires and Alamogordo is frontrunner to host the 2012 All-Star Game Again.
